As a Systems Engineer Level 2 at Independent Software, you will support the planning, development, and integration of technical systems by analyzing user needs, developing system requirements, and overseeing system architecture and design efforts. You will provide guidance throughout the system development lifecycle and ensure all technical solutions align with stakeholder requirements, program constraints, and operational goals.
This role provides the opportunity to work on complex, mission-critical systems with direct impact. You’ll be part of a collaborative team environment that values clear processes, technical excellence, and integrity. If you enjoy solving structured problems, working with cross-functional teams, and seeing your engineering work realized in real systems, this is a solid opportunity for growth and contribution.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage system requirements and derived requirements to ensure system compatibility with defined architectures such as DoDAF and SOA
Contribute to systems engineering documentation including System Engineering Plans, Initial Capability Documents, Requirements Specifications, and Interface Control Documents
Develop system design solutions that fulfill functional and performance requirements
Assist in the development and allocation of system, functional, and component-level requirements
Participate in Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) and contribute to new capability designs
Generate alternative system concepts, physical architectures, and evaluate design trade-offs
Support risk management by assessing technical risks and potential impacts
Define verification methods and processes to ensure compliance with requirements
Plan early verification strategies for new or evolving system designs
Prepare timeline and flow diagrams for time-dependent system functions
Coordinate and resolve cross-discipline action items from reviews and boards such as CCB, design, and test reviews
Establish change control processes for system requirements and ensure traceability and stakeholder alignment
Manage and maintain the technical integrity of the system baseline through lifecycle changes
Support the planning and analysis of DoD Certification and Accreditation (C&A) efforts
Participate in the development and review of JCIDS documents
Provide technical leadership for the integration, interfacing, development, and testing of software and hardware components
Develop operational concepts and scenarios describing system-user-environment interactions
Conduct analysis of non-functional system attributes like reliability, maintainability, survivability, and producibility
Establish coordination processes for integration efforts among multiple development teams
Support interface definition, design changes, and configuration management across teams
Review and provide input to the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), work packages, and Integrated Master Plan (IMP)
Derive stakeholder needs and lower-level technical requirements from system-level documents
Define and manage component-level functional and interface requirements
Develop and validate derived requirements for Information Assurance and Security Mechanism Technologies
Implement Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and comprehensive DoDAF-based solutions
Capture interface designs and ensure all interface data is stored in an accessible, shared repository
Review and approve engineering documentation to ensure technical completeness and accuracy
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Experience in systems engineering principles, system lifecycle management, and architecture frameworks such as DoDAF
Ability to develop and manage technical requirements across systems and subsystems
Experience coordinating across cross-functional teams, including software, hardware, security, and test
Knowledge of risk management, verification planning, and configuration control
Familiarity with government documentation standards and lifecycle engineering documentation
Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills
Understanding of system integration practices and interface control
Experience supporting Certification and Accreditation (C&A) processes and documentation
Familiarity with information assurance principles and security controls
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering Management, or a related technical field from an accredited college or university
Fourteen (14) years of experience as a Systems Engineer on programs of similar scope and complexity
Substitution: Five (5) additional years of systems engineering experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree
Certification Requirements
DOD 8570 Certification
Clearance Requirement:
Must possess an active TS/SCI with appropriate Polygraph to be considered for this role
