What you will be doing:
As a Technical Writer with Independent Software, you will play a critical role in developing and maintaining clear, accurate, and user-focused documentation that supports a wide range of technical capabilities. You will prepare, review, revise, and manage technical materials across software engineering, systems engineering, system operations, testing, and user support. Your work will include writing and editing documentation for hardware and software systems, creating installation and configuration instructions, producing “how-to” guides, and developing code-level documentation in collaboration with technical teams.
You will work closely with engineers, developers, and subject matter experts to translate complex technical information into well-structured content that is accessible to end users, operators, and stakeholders. Your responsibilities will also include developing implementation guides, end-user documentation, field and data definitions, data flow descriptions, and other technical publications using a variety of source materials such as engineering diagrams, technical drawings, and SME interviews.
• Prepare, review, revise, and maintain technical documentation for software, hardware, systems engineering, system operations, and system testing
• Develop installation guides, configuration documentation, operational procedures, and task-driven “how-to” instructions
• Create code-level documentation, implementation guides, and end-user guides for deployed capabilities
• Produce field descriptions, data definitions, and data flow documentation supporting system and capability understanding
• Format, structure, and update technical publications using information derived from technical drawings, engineering artifacts, SME interviews, and other available resources
• Ensure all documentation meets quality, clarity, and consistency standards across the program
• Demonstrated experience as a Technical Writer supporting programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity
• Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and related documentation tools
• Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and accurate written content
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work collaboratively with technical teams
Minimum Qualifications (One of the following):
• Eight (8) years of experience as a Technical Writer supporting programs of similar scope, type, and complexity, with a bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline
• A master’s degree may substitute for two (2) years of experience, reducing the requirement to six (6) years
• Four (4) additional years of Technical Writing experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree
